ABSTRACT:

Background of the study: Menstrual blood-derived stem cells (MenSCs) are morphologically and functionally similar to cells directly extracted from the endometrium, and present dual expression of mesenchymal and embryonic cell markers, thus becoming interesting tools for regenerative medicine. Aim: To determine the effectiveness of structured teaching programme regarding knowledge on menstrual blood stem cell banking among basic B.Sc and Post Basic B.Sc Final Year Nursing Students Methodology: Research design was pre-experimental design (One group pre-test and post – test design) study was undertaken in college of nursing PGIMS. Rohtak. Samples in the study includes basic B.Sc (N) and P.B B.Sc (N). Self-structured knowledge questionnaire on menstrual blood stem cell banking were developed and administered to the samples for data collection. Structured teaching programme was administered to the samples and post-test was taken on 7th day from the day of intervention. Data were analysed through descriptive and inferential statistics. Results: the pre-test mean and standard deviation knowledge score were 11.35+2.957, the post-test mean and standard deviation knowledge score were 22.95+1.893. this was statistically significant at ‘p’ value 0.001 with the paired ‘t’ test score 31.698. Conclusion: In this study, structured teaching programme served as an effective method to enhance the knowledge regarding menstrual blood stem cell banking among Basic B. Sc (N) and Post Basic B. Sc (N) Students.

INTRODUCTION:

The novel source of stem cells are stem cells derived from menstrual blood (MenSCs). These cells can be isolated from female volunteered donor non – invasively without ethical issues. Major property of such cells are proved to have high rate of proliferation and it contains multi lineage differentiation patency.1

 

Menstrual blood stem cells could be a good source of stem cells, identified in an experimental study done in animals. It have depicted successful treatment of stroke, colitis, limb ischemia, coronary heart disease, muscle atrophy using menstrual blood stem cells.2

 

Within the first 48 h of menses, with stumps of the gland remaining in the basalis, a rapid repair and re-epithelization of the endometrium lining occurs to cover the exposed basal surface.3 Evidence was provided by the presence of colony-forming units (CFUs) in suspension cells from hysterectomy specimens.4 The cell doubling time of MSCs (Mesenchymal stem cells) follow the order of UCMSCs (Umbilical cord-derived cells MSCs) (21 h) < MenSCs (Menstrual blood-derived mesenchymal stem cells) (26 h) < ADSCs (Adipose-derived MSCs) (30 h), with MenSCs right in the middle.5 Another study suggested that MenSCs may have better proliferative capability with a shorter population doubling time of 20 h.6

 

Since from the beginning of first experiment with embryonic stem cells, peoples in India are bound to have moral issues. These cells were found to be an effective diagnostic tool for detection of various diseases apart from treating it. Scientists can track disease progression from the onset of the disease.7

Menstrual blood banking has been pioneered by Cryo-Cell International, USA who are the technology partners of LifeCell and have been offering this service in other countries under the brand C’elle.8

 

Whole world is now reeling under the umbrella of several incurable and debilitating diseases, various researches in the recent times had found new possibilities of treating and diagnosis such illnesses. One such possible method of improving the quality and perhaps even the duration of life is through the menstrual blood stem cells. The advancements in stem cell research and development.9 With all these basic information, the researcher decided to study the final year nursing students knowledge about menstrual stem cell.

 

OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY:

1.     To assess the pre-test and post-test knowledge regarding menstrual blood stem cell banking among Basic B.sc and post basic B.sc final year Nursing students in college of nursing Pt. B.D Sharma, PGIMS, Rohtak

2.     To evaluate the effectiveness of structured teaching programme on knowledge regarding menstrual blood stem cell banking.

3.     To find out association between pre-test knowledge regarding menstrual blood stem cell banking and selected socio-demographic variables of Basic B.sc and post basic B.sc final year Nursing students in college of nursing Pt. B.D Sharma, PGIMS, Rohtak.

 

METHODOLOGY:

The present study uses quantitative approach and the research design was pre – experimental design (pre-test post-test design). Study was done in College of Nursing. Pt. B.D Sharma University of Health Sciences. Rohtak. Sampling technique was total enumeration sampling technique. Size of the sample were 83. Tool for assessment of knowledge was developed and validated under five experts in the field of nursing and two medical experts. There were 25 questions on the knowledge questionnaire and the questions were distributed as follows:

Pilot study had been conducted from 6.02.2021 to 16.02.2021 among 15 nursing students of KVM College of Nursing – Rohtak. The reliability of the research tool was calculated at the end of pilot study, test – retest method was used in estimating reliability scare which was found to be 0.7 through Karl Pearson Correlation Co-efficient method. Main data collection was done from 3.03.2021 to 3.04.21. pre-test assessment was done on day – 1, the average time taken for the pre –test was 15 minutes. On the same day structured teaching programme was conducted using the power point and white board. Post test was conducted on the 7th day by using the same tool. The collected data were analysed with SPSS. Descriptive and Inferential statistics was used.

With regard to age of the subject’s majority 77(92.8%) were in age < than 24. Subjects pursuing B.Sc (N) were in majority 71(85.5%). Unmarried subjects 79(95.2%) are more than married. Regarding residential area of the subjects in this study majority 44(53.0%) were from urban area. Majority of the subjects 57(68.7%) had obtained knowledge regarding menstrual blood stem cells from books. Occupation of parents shows that equal number 29(34.9%) were from govt and private job. Education of parents shows majority 47(56.7%) were studied 10th – 12th classes. An overwhelming majority of the subjects 81(97.6%) have not received you received any information about menstrual blood stem cell banking before.

From the above table, it was interpreted that during pre-test majority of the subjects 67 (80.7 %) had moderate knowledge. At the time of post-test all the subjects 83 (100 %) had adequate knowledge. None of the subjects were with moderate and inadequate knowledge.

From figure – 1 it was interpreted that majority of the subjects 58(69.9%) had moderate knowledge regarding menstrual blood stem cell banking and at the time of post-test 79(95.2%) were with adequate knowledge.

Mean of pre-test knowledge was 11.33, S.D+2.957. Similarly, the mean of post-test knowledge was 22.95, S.D+1.893. The mean difference value was 11.6. paired ‘t’ test value was 31.698 for the degree of freedom 82. The ‘P’ value was 0.000* which was statistically significant at the ‘P’ value < 0.05.

 

Hence, we conclude that, the Structured Teaching Programme Regarding Knowledge on Stem Cell Banking among Basic B. Sc and Post Basic B.Sc. Final Year Nursing Students was effective.

 

DISCUSSION:

Findings of the present study were discussed based on the supportive studies. In this study the mean pre-test knowledge score regarding menstrual blood stem cells were 11.33 and during post-test it was 22.95. the standard deviation scores were 2.957 and 1.893 respectively during pre-test and post-test. Paired ‘t’ test value was 31.698 for the degree of freedom 82, which was statistically significant at the ‘P’ value 0.001.

 

In a study done by Hans N and Kaur S (2016) with an aim to assess the effectiveness of structured teaching programme on knowledge regarding menstrual blood stem cells banking among nursing students studying in selected nursing college of Amritsar, Punjab. In this study according to pre-test knowledge, majority (92.7%) of nursing students had average knowledge regarding menstrual blood stem cells banking and according to post-test knowledge, majority (88.5%) of nursing students had good knowledge. On comparing, mean post-test knowledge score was more than pre-test knowledge score which was calculated by t-test (t=19.197) at p<0.05 level of significance.10

 

Effectives of structured teaching programme on knowledge regarding menstrual blood stem cell among under graduate students in Uttarakhand, by Lohani E, Bhatt N and Rana M(2021) A pre-test was conducted by using self-administered questionnaire after pre-test, structure teaching programme was given again post test was conducted to assess the effectiveness of programme. Collected data was analysed by using descriptive and inferential statistics. On analysis, the study revealed that pre-test, (20%) having poor knowledge, (80%) having adequate knowledge. And in post-test Students (7%) having moderate knowledge, 56 Students (93%) having good knowledge. The improvements were statistically tested by paired “t” test value and result found to be significant at 2.00 value.11

 

CONCLUSION:

From the findings of the current study it was accepted that structured teaching program was an effective educational strategy to impart knowledge on menstrual blood stem cells banking among nursing students. So, it is the accountability of the Nurse educators to implement periodic in-service educational and training program for all nursing staff and students to update their knowledge regarding Menstrual blood stem cells banking so that they can disseminate this information to the general public.
